How does Cutera CoolGlide Hair Removal Work?

This is a non-invasive FDA approved laser for permanent hair reduction which is custom designed to eliminate undesired hair from all parts of the body, in all skin types, even tanned or dark colored skin. The laser generates pulses of intense and concentrated light directed through a small cooled hand piece. This intense energy passes though the skin to the hair follicle where it is absorbed by the pigment melanin. This causes selective damage to the hair root while protecting the skin. The energy is customized to each patient’s skin type and is delivered only for a fraction of a second. The surface of the skin is protected by a built in cooling system, which protects and soothes the skin during treatment.

How does this differ from electrolysis and other lasers and light devices?

The Cutera CoolGlide Laser uses wide beams of light, which treat many hairs at once, unlike electrolysis, which treats hair-by-hair. Since the Cutera CoolGlide Laser can treat dozens of hairs with each pulse, it’s possible to treat larger areas, like the back, shoulders, arms, legs and face. This laser can be used almost anywhere on the body, and anesthesia is not required. Even sensitive areas like nipples, the upper lip and the bikini line can be treated easily and with virtually no or minimal discomfort. Since this laser uses the longest available 1064 nanometer wavelength, the Cutera CoolGlide reaches even the deepest roots, which can be from 4-6 millimeters below the skin’s surface. The Cutera CoolGlide also allows Dr. Ohri to adjust the duration of the pulse of the laser to best suit the thickness of hair on different parts of your body. With the Cutera CoolGlide Laser, it’s possible to improve the appearance of skin, and get rid of unwanted hair, with just a few treatments.

What areas of the body can be treated?

All parts of the body can be treated with the Cutera CoolGlide laser. For women, the most common areas of treatment are the upper lip, chin, whole face and neck, bikini line, arms, legs and underarms. For men, commonly treated areas include shoulders, back, the beard area, chest and abdomen.

What are the benefits of the CoolGlide laser hair removal compared to alternative treatments?

Primarily, the Cutera CoolGlide laser can treat larger areas with less discomfort than electrolysis, waxing or tweezing. It’s also a speedy and comfortable service, and offers long lasting results.

The CoolGlide laser offers longer lasting permanent hair reduction, while hair removal with shaving, waxing, or depilatory creams only give you smooth skin for one to two weeks. After each laser treatment, the hair that grow back are thinner and lighter. Plucking and waxing can cause irritation, which actually may stimulate hair growth, because the body defends itself against hair removal and produces thicker, stronger hairs. Between treatments, you can shave for additional smoothness.

What are the risks of hair removal?

Short-term side effects may include slight reddening of the skin or swelling of the treated area. The redness and swelling typically last for only an hour or less. The Cutera CoolGlide laser is less likely than its older counterparts to cause lingering irritation, pigment changes, or blistering. Rarely, (in about 2% of treated patients) there can be increased or decreased pigment in the treated area. Rarer still are blisters. The light from the Cutera CoolGlide laser does not cause skin cancer. Laser hair removal does not cause hair to grow back thicker, darker or more quickly.

Is laser hair removal permanent?

The average patient in clinical studies sees a 48% reduction in hair growth after three treatments and up to an 80% lasting reduction after five to six treatments (results vary). After you have completed a series of four to sex treatments, any remaining hair will usually be finer and lighter in color. Most patients require one to two touch-up treatments per year. For non-pigmented hair, blond, thin light brown, red and vellus (peach fuzz) meladine is FDA cleared to enhance the effects of laser hair removal on non-pigmented hair: meladine deposits natural melanin in the hair follicle which aids the laser in targeting the hair follicle for removal.

Meladine is the only product in the market that is proven to aid laser in treating non-pigmented hair. Call our office at (585) 786-0234 for further information on this product.

How much hair WILL grow back, and how fast will it grow back?

The Cutera CoolGlide laser works by destroying hair roots which are actively producing hair at the time of treatment, and which are dark enough to absorb sufficient laser energy. The hair shafts in the treated hair follicles will shed anywhere from one to three weeks after treatment.

After your first treatment, hair growth may resume in a few weeks, as previously dormant hair follicles become active, and the hair follicles, which were only stunned, and not killed, will begin to produce new hair. You’ll notice a further reduction of your unwanted hair after your second treatment, and more hair reduction after your third and fourth treatments. Of course, any hair that grows after a laser treatment will be finer and lighter in color.

At least four to five treatments are usually needed to more effectively reduce the amount and thickness of unwanted hair. But the number of treatments needed depend upon the following factors: hair color (those with light colored hair may need more treatments), ethnic and genetic background, as those with darker skin may need more treatments, hormonal status, hair density, the area being treated, age, weight and any medication you’re currently taking.

Am I a good candidate for Cutera CoolGlide laser hair removal?

Since the Cutera CoolGlide laser uses such long wavelengths for hair removal, treatment is successful even on people with darker skin, or light brown hair. However, the Cutera CoolGlide laser cannot reliably treat hair, which is naturally blonde, red or white, because it does not have enough pigment in the roots, unless you choose to use meladine, which deposits natural melanin in these hairs. It is available at Ohri Laser Cosmetics.

Children can be treated as well, but they must be old enough to understand and cooperate with treatment.

What is the Cutera CoolGlide laser hair removal treatment like?

There is no standard “prep” before this procedure, although you should not wear makeup, and it’s also important to shave or trim any long hair in the area being treated, as excess hair can interfere with treatment. You should also minimize your tanning for a week or so before treatment, because darker skin canc ompete with hair pigment to absorb laser energy and cause damage to the superficial skin.

Everyone in the treatment room (including you!) must wear protective goggles while the laser is in use.

After your treatment, you can return to work and resume all your normal activities immediately. It’s not uncommon, however, for the treated area of your skin to be drier than normal that evening, but you can use a little more of your favorite moisturizer.

Will treatment hurt?

You will feel a momentary stinging sensation when the laser is applied, as if you had accidentally snapped yourself with a rubber band, but there will be no bleeding, and no wound is created. Most people find the first treatment more painful than subsequent treatments.

Many patients find they have less discomfort if they shave the area to be treated at least two hours before treatment, since freshly shaved skin is more sensitive.

If you do experience an unusual amount of discomfort, please let Dr. Ohri know so she can apply more cooling or adjust the laser setting.
If you know you have a low tolerance for pain, please let Dr. Ohri know before you are treated, so she can apply an anesthetic cream. However, most people find it helpful to take two over the counter pain relievers a few hours before being treated.
